Meet the Fagadau Sisters, Hilary and Hannah, Co-Founders of 12.26

Tell us about 12.26.

12.26 is a Dallas-based contemporary art gallery that shows emerging and mid-career artists from Texas and beyond. We strive to work with both beginner and seasoned collectors. We are proud to have opened the space with two incredible female artists that we both have admired and followed for a long time: Alex Olson (Los Angeles) and Nancy Shaver (New York). Their joint exhibition, “Waters,” is on view at the gallery through November 16th.

How did you and your sister get started?

Both of us grew up in an art-loving family. Our parents are collectors, and our grandmother was a private art dealer who sold blue-chip prints out of her home in Dallas in the 1980s and 1990s. Prior to opening the gallery, Hannah worked in development at Dallas Contemporary, and Hilary was the director of a gallery in Los Angeles called Parrasch Heiijnen.

What’s it like working with your sister?

More than anything, it’s just fun! People think that we get sick of each other because we are together all the time, but even after work hours we still want to hang out.

Are you and your sister similar or different? How does that help your business?

I like to say we are variations on a theme. The best thing about our working relationship is that when one of us is stressed, the other is calm, which keeps us balanced.

Can you share a funny childhood story about you and your sister?

Our entrepreneurial spirit began early. When most kids were having lemonade stands, my sister and I opted to sell all of our beanie babies on our neighborhood street corner. It was right at the height of the beanie baby craze. It still might be our most brilliant business move to date.

What is your favorite thing about your business?

We get to meet and discover new artists from all over the world and give them the opportunity to exhibit their work in Dallas. We are also working with a handful of local artists and it’s fun to be able to contextualize their work with what is happening in the contemporary art world at large.

What is your biggest short-term and/or long-term goal for your business?

Our biggest short-term goal is to continue to exhibit exciting and challenging exhibitions to the Dallas community. Long-term, we hope to connect and inspire the city’s next generation of art collectors.
