Meet the Slageter Sisters, Babs Horner & Susan Palma, Authors of “Sophistication is Overrated”

Tell us about Sophistication is Overrated.

We are sister authors (a cook and a decorator) of “Sophistication is Overrated”, the tongue in cheek coffee table book that you will actually use. One of the ways we are unique is in our mischievous take on life and our chapter formats. There are eleven parties, one depicted the “chic way,” then the same party shown “our way,” which incorporates blowup dolls dressed like your bestie and fiber optic party favors.

We are so proud that:

  1. Hoda held up our book on The Today Show.
  2. Caroline Bryan, the comedian (and Luke’s wife) posted about us.
  3. We went viral with the rapper, 2 Chainz.
  4. We got invited to the Golden Globes swag bag room and met the bailiff from Judge Judy,
  5. Have had book signings in hundreds of fabulous stores and women’s clubs (Bergdorf’s, several Nieman’s, Scully and Scully, and Preston Road Pharmacy).

We are pinching ourselves every day!

How did you and your sister get started?

We had both read so many sad family sagas that we wanted to tell about our incredibly upbeat family. Even though some major trials, sense of humor was paramount. We wanted to honor our parents and show how they showed us by example how to laugh every day.

What’s the best thing about working with your sister?

Since we live so far apart (Dallas & New Canaan) traveling to events gives us lots of fun sister time. Our favorite thing is laughing with funny, like-minded people, sharing ours and their crazy family stories.

Are you and your sister similar or different? How does that help your business?

We are alike in that we can both “find the funny” everywhere. Our differences help us fill gaps. At our signings, every book sports a grosgrain ribbon bow. Susan is obsessed with the details and will painstakingly tie a perfect bow that will take at least 2 hours. Babs will get that quasi bow done in two half-assed seconds.

Can you share a funny childhood story about you and your sister?

Well, we have lots in the book, but this truly happened in our 20’s. We had a wedding/baby shower for a good friend, who convinced SueSue and our mom that she only got pregnant by swimming in the pool with her boyfriend. So, of course we went full throttle with the swimming pool themed shower. Not kidding! So much for our girl’s school sex ed course.

What’s your funniest story in working with your sister?

At the Atlanta Gift Market, we were innocently signing books when we looked up to see four of the biggest men who asked us to come with them to meet someone. Our first thought… it was the hotel security coming to retrieve the contents of the mini bar currently in our purses. But no, we were taken to the showroom where throngs of fans were there to meet the rapper, 2 Chainz. His decorator had given him our book and he wanted to meet the “Buckhead Bettys.” We spent the most fun hour comparing charm bracelets, which much to our kid’s surprise, went viral. (See below for photo!) We meet the best people!

What saying/phrase does your sister always say?

We both use “stop it!” as in “no kidding!”

What is your biggest short-term and/or long-term goal for your business?

We both want to lose 10 pounds by tomorrow.

We did get advice from a successful business woman to really stop and write out our goals. One of ours was for Hoda to hold up our book. Two years later, it happened! Now…where’s Bill Hader?

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your business to date?

There are so many facets and details that need daily attention which can seem daunting, but you can do it, one day at a time.

What advice would you give to an entrepreneur who is just starting out?

We love quotes and this one from Seth Godin is timely. “The only thing worse than starting something and failing is not starting something.” Find your passion and go for it.

How are you finding balance?

Finding a man with a comb over at the post office keeps us grounded… consciously look for the funny.

What have we not asked you that you want to say about entrepreneurship, sisters, or business advice?
