Byron Sanders, CEO of Big Thought, shares how his team first got grounded – then performed a pirouette. Yes, it’s a pivot of sorts, but when Big Thought leaders came to understand that serving a young person now means also taking into account the needs of the entire family – that requires the #agility of a pirouette. Going digital – with a list of partners including Boeing and the State Fair of Texas – Big Thought and Dallas City of Learning launched an online learning hub featuring hundreds of free, quality educational programs for families to access while learning from home. Hear how Big Thought is building contingency plans, working to prevent the “summer slide”, and prioritizing social and emotional learning. “We are meant to be with other people,” says Byron Sanders, “this is a new type of trauma.” Sanders explains that fundraising remains critical because programming has become more expensive. PPE supplies, cleaning supplies – and the potential for students to be out of school for 24 hours a day – means a tremendous investment in infrastructure must take place. Sanders addresses racism today, and how we can talk to children about current issues. This interview will leave you thinking, get you reading and perhaps nudge you to mentor a young person on the road to higher education.
